Central Asian Water Conflict and Migration Network

From 27-28 April 2023, Harald Sterly from the Working Group on Population Geography and Demography participated in the first workshop of the “Central Asian Water Conflict and Migration Network” (CAWAMNET), that was held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

The two-day event brought together 25 experts from civil society, scientific and international donor communities, and policymakers from Central Asia and Europe.

During the workshop, keynote presentations were given on the role of climate change, water governance, and human migration in the region, and participants identified research needs and policy fields in thematic groups that followed the inputs. Harald Sterly gave a keynote on the climate-water-migration nexus in the Central Asian context. Next steps will be the development and publication of a joint research agenda, and a follow-up meeting in Germany.
