The podcast of the Climate and Energy Fund

Game changer or energy trap?

Imagine if we could simply capture CO₂ emissions and lock them away forever? Sounds like the simplest solution to the climate crisis? We're going after it. In this episode of Folgewirkung, we look at two very different approaches to carbon storage: technical and natural.

In the first part, we talk to Tobias Pröll, Professor of Energy Technology and Energy Management at BOKU Vienna, about carbon capture and storage - CCS for short. The technology can already capture up to 90% of CO₂ from industrial processes.

Peatlands work in a completely different way: they store carbon naturally - and extremely efficiently. Geoecologist Stefan Glatzel takes us to the Brunnlust near Moosbrunn, a fen south of Vienna, and explains why peatlands are millennia-old CO₂ reservoirs - and what happens when they are drained.

Shownotes:

The EU-wide LIFE AMooRe project is committed to the renaturation and protection of moors in Austria - as a contribution to climate, species and water protection. Over 1,400 hectares of moorland are to be restored by 2033.
