The five-year project LTER-CWN (Long-Term Ecosystem Research Infrastructure for Carbon, Water and Nitrogen) focuses on the effects of extreme climatic events on greenhouse gas exchange processes (e.g. carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide) between soil and atmosphere, changing water transport and availability, and the release of nitrogen from soils, among others.
Key national actors in long-term ecological research (LTER) join forces to establish a new infrastructure for the collection of environmental data. Preoject coordinator is the Environmental Sciences Research Network (ESRN) of the University of Vienna with Prof. Stephan Glatzel as partner leadership.
The six LTER-CWN sites will enable long-term monitoring and research in the characteristic ecosystems of Austria. Two sites operates the working group Geoecology in the Pürgschachener Moor in Styria and the LTER Lake Neusiedler See.
Andreas Maier as technical support is maintaining and managing the new modern infrastructure like a year-round electricity supply for automatic gas chambers in the Pürgschachener Moor and a new Eddy Covariance Tower at Lake Neusiedl.
