Does Climate Change Move You? Integrating environmental migration into adaptation policies
Migration, environment, and climate change (MECC) – Workshop
Our team member Dr. Harald Sterly together with Dr. Sounjadeep Banerjee hosted International Short Course “Does Climate Change Move You? Integrating environmental migration into adaptation policies” which took place between 29.08.2022 and 31.08.2022 at the University of Vienna.
The course addressed the increasing need to accommodate the nexus of migration, environment, and climate change (MECC) into existing and future adaptation planning. UNFCCC focal points, members of relevant ministries and civil society organizations from Moldova, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan took part in the workshop. A range of topics were discussed, including:
- How do different forms of mobility and migration influence vulnerability and adaptation to climate change?
- How can autonomous adaptation (of individuals and households) through migration be aligned with planned adaptation, and maladaptation avoided?
- What concrete entry points are there in relevant policies for integrating different aspects of environmental migration?
The short course is part of an ongoing collaboarative project between TransForm Research Group and the IOM on mainstreaming migration into national adaptation policy in Moldova.
